Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) on one of the dividing lines in the Dock and select Dock Preferences. From the window that appears, uncheck the option labeled Show recent applications in Dock. The change will take effect immediately. The recent applications icons will immediately disappear from the Dock. Just turn it off. Now click the Start button, and you should see the Start menu. Your switch to the Start menu or Start screen as the default will stay permanent unless you change it back.
To use any of these key combinations, press and hold the keys immediately after pressing the power button to turn on your Mac, or after your Mac begins to restart. Keep holding until the described behavior occurs.
